Shopping for fabric and supplies in Bangkok

Cotton Touch

Warning: avoid traveling by tuk-tuk, they only want to take you to jewelry shops where you will be ripped off! Ignore touts who tell you places are closed. They want to take you to a jewelry shop instead.

Sampeng Lane in Chinatown is the best place to buy 100% cotton fabric at good prices. Prices range from 3 meters for 100 baht ($1 per yard) up to 250 baht per meter (about $7 per yard). You’ll find Fabric Center in addition to many other shops. Opening hours are from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The following stores in Bangkok sell 100% cotton fabric: Fabric House: 2nd floor Central World near Isetan dept store tel. 02-255-6125

Fabric House: ground floor Central City, Bang Na, Bangkok tel. 02-361-0570

Fabric House: ground floor Seacon Square, Srinakarin Rd., Bangkok tel. 02-721-8709

Fabric Fashion: 1st floor The Mall 3, Ramkamhaeng, Bangkok tel. 02-310-1020

Fabric Center: 277 Sampeng Lane tel. 02-222-2460

Tang hua seng is a department store with two branches: one in Thonburi and one in Banglampoo on Khao San Road. They have fabric, fat quarters, batting (white or black), thread, rotary cutters and blades. They sell a lot of craft supplies. I noticed sa paper, burlap, and terrycloth. They have velcro in pink, red, green, black and white up to 4″ wide. Look on the Nancy Chandler map Open daily 10:00 to 21:00.

Rotary cutters, blades and cutting mats are available at JCC stationery store on Narathiwat Road near the intersection with Surawong, near the Silom area.

Prices are low. In Chinatown, if you buy 10 meters or more you get the discounted wholesale price. The shop keepers are very honest. However, watch out for pickpockets. One of us had our wallet stolen from the back pocket of our backpack.

Also see Sampeng Lane Map for more info about Chinatown, where we like to shop for quilt fabric  and a map we drew up

Hi, Jill – I wonder if Retayne color fixative is sold anywhere in Bangkok. I have some batik (purchased in Indonesia, I’m sure it’s chemically dyed) that I’ve started to make into a quilt square for a friend’s wedding, and it bleeds terribly! I’d rather not start over with new fabric, and it seems like Retayne might help me. Any thoughts? Many thanks!

Some shops here carry the Dylon brand from Australia and I they have the fixer. Try Hong’s, #48 on the Sampeng map. Or try the office supply departments in the larger department stores, they often carry crafting supplies.

Also, it turns out, you can sometimes get a better price, even in Sampaeng.

    Hi Jill,

Do you know where I can find felt in Bangkok? I searched some department stores and walked around Sampeng, but no sign of felt. Do let me know, if you know any. Thank you.

    Regards,

Hello. I need to find heavy canvas duck to make durable high quality duffel bags from in Bangkok. Do you know of any shops that sell heavy duty canvas? I would also like it to be water repellent, stain guarded etc.
    Thanks.

    Hi Jill!

I just had to leave a comment as I am embarking on a search for a pair of pinking shears in BKK, and your blog has made the endeavor feel a lot less daunting and aimless! Alas, I’ve only ever sewn one very plain quilt – I tend to knit and sew home decor or children’s things instead, but your posts have been very educational for me :) I’m going to Sport City tomorrow, and will check out Maison Blanche while I am there for certain!
